The Best Podcasts of 2023

2023 has been a whirlwind of a year, with ups and downs, though throughout the year there has always been an abundance of excellent podcasts. In the list below, I’ve selected the top 10 (in no particular order) of my favourite podcasts from 2023. In other words, the podcasts that I always return to week after week. I’ve tried to provide a mix of different genres and hopefully you can find a new podcast in this list to add to your favourites in the new year!

Lastly, did I miss one? If you think so, please reply to this email and let me know!

A brilliant podcast led by the dynamic duo of Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart. Following (another) crazy year in politics, this podcast has been my go-to podcasts for all major news commentary both happening in the UK and world. I especially enjoying the synergy between both hosts and how they are able to effectively balance opinions. The only podcast that also featured in 2022’s list! Lastly, a note for The News Agents which was is another of my favourite news/politics podcasts.

One of my favourite podcast seriers of 2023. This podcast analyses the authors through the lens of some of the most contencious topics of our time, and specificially focuses around themes of gender and sex, of which J K Rowling has been specifically vocal. I found it an incredibly thought-provoking an insightful podcast, definitely worth binge-ing if you have not already!

P J Vogt was the voice behind Reply All, one of the most popular podcasts in recent years. After some drama surrounding the podcast, he peeled off to start his own venture. Search Engine was launched in 2023 aiming to answer those questions (big and small) that the internet can’t help us with. From Cryptocurrency, to Sushi, to Diamonds, everything is covered!

In 2023, I listened to a lot more news/business/politics podcasts which didn’t leave much room for true crime/society series. However, from all of those I listened to, I easily devoured this one. A great story about two lawyers who uncovered an unusual trend occurring in their area and decide to do something about it. Just four episodes and it flies by!

Host David Senra reads biographies, articles, letters, etc., all to provide the most in-depth and insightful podcast. Each episode focus’ on a specific person (think Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, Walt Disney, Picasso) and provides insight in their lives, business, and ideas. A fascinating podcast which I’ve enjoyed listening to throughout the year. It even got a shout-out in the Lex Fridman Jeff Bezos podcast episode.

Podcasts that mix in music are quite hard to come by (Song Exploder, Broken Record) and this podcast that dives into the catalogue of one of the best songwriters is undoubtedly the best. I especially enjoy the snippets of each song and the conversational aspect to the podcast. Enjoy!

2023 has been a great year (once again) for TV, and podcasts have certainely capitalised on that. TV shows such as The Crown and The Last Of Us have both had good supplementary podcasts. However, the stand out for me was HBO’s Succession Podcast, hosted by Kara Swisher and featuring a range of guests from the cast, team, directors, and creator Jesse Armstrong, this podcast really showed how it should be done!

Another Goalhanger podcast on the list (The Rest is…) but for history this has to be one of, if not, the best. I’ve enjoyed more history podcasts this year - notably; The Explorers Podcast, Empire, and Fall of Civilisations. The Rest of History covers a myriad of historical events picking them apart from all angles. Epic!

Now, from the macroeconomy to AI breakthroughs, there has been an endless stream of business news this year. A personal favourite podcast of mine has been the All-In Podcast (business/technology commentary) but overall the Prof G Pod takes the crown. The wild personality of Scott Galloway always keeps it interesting and every episodes is mixed up with different topics to always keep you locked in.

A lesser-known podcast but it certainly does pack a punch. The podcast follows the dramatic life of John O’Hegarty who, following an impressive education and bright future, had his life turned upside down by a seemingly minor incident. Must listen - you will be gripped!
